We offer our congratulations to Tom Murphy who received a first prize at the Guild seminar competition novice section. Tom submitted a budvase with flower, turned from a block of spalted beech which had gone dosey as Tom puts it, meaning it had considerable rot. Tom first stabilised this block, using a red dyed resin in a pressure pot, followed this up by adding red, orange and yellow resin to square up the block, then stabilised it again, this time with yellow resin, finally baking it in the oven to harden ready for turning. When turned, which Tom tells me caused some heartache he finished with a couple of coats of super glue
